The eight-year-old proved he still has wins in him as he captured the $20,000 Anthony Malone Constructions Benchmark 65 Handicap (1600m).
Zarrieg has been a frustrating horse to follow through his 51-start career but there is no question about his ability.
Even Leeton trainer Peter Clancy admitted he has struggled to work Zarreig out.
“Races have got to be run to suit him,” Clancy said.
“Even today, he got to the front too soon and wanted to put his head up and pull up.
“He’s not a genuine racehorse. He’s got a lot of ability, you just never know what he’s going to do.”
Clancy said he can never go to the races confident of success with Zarreig.
“Never,” he said.
“Even on his work, when he works very good, he runs ordinary. And when his work is ordinary, he can come out and win.
“Things have just got to be run to suit.”
While he has been frustrating, he has won connections, the Clancy family, more than $110,000 in prizemoney courtesy of 11 wins from 51 starts.
On Tuesday, Zarreig ($9.00) got the better of a blanket finish to beat Golan Power ($7.00) by a half length. Benno’s Boy ($19.00) was close up in third place.
Clancy said while Zarreig stays sound, he will continue racing with 1400 metres his ideal trip.
Zarreig was Canberra jockey Brendan Ward’s second win of the day.
