Level the playing field
THERE has been a lot of controversy about the expenditure on public art, yet no one questions the amount of money spent on the sporting facilities in Wagga.

For a diverse community, we need to look at how to apportion spending on all types of activities.
The support should not only be for the team sports, but for all sports and for those who are creative and innovative.

Climate of misinformation
THE cartoon “Pope’s View” in the DA on August 26 raises a few questions.
Who are the “climate scientists”? What are their qualifications? What are “the latest temperature records”? What makes them “scary”?
Or perhaps there is no need to ask these questions.
The “climate scientists” and the “temperature records” that are “scary” may only be in the cartoon.

Independence the key
INDEPENDENT progressive councillors, free from political strings, that’s what we need.
Good on you, Ros Pragnell, for severing ties with the Greens and standing on your own two feet.
For by serving on council, you serve us and not any political party.
Hope the other aspiring councillors have your wisdom and common sense.

Time to draw a line
I HAVE read with great interest many letters related to the council election.
Could I first congratulate each of the 53 candidates for putting forward their interests to serve the people of Wagga for the next four years.
I also acknowledge the fact there will be a huge improvement in the number of female candidates. I believe this is good for Wagga.
I personally had just short of 16 years as an elected councillor and prior to that I served as patrol commander for Wagga Police.
I had experience in standing for election as a councillor as a member of a team ticket and then led a team ticket on two occasions, and finally I stood alone as an independent.
I was elected on four occasions.
The results were good when I was involved on those above the line occasions.
However, when I stood as independent, it was a very close call to be elected.
I found that serving council was a very interesting experience.
In my involvement with the police, I was there to serve the people in the areas I was stationed. Really, the same applies with being a councillor.
In my council time, I saw some councillors who had the opinion that being a councillor was all about them and those people closely associated with them. This is where I believe council has failed the people of this great city for too long.
Being an elected councillor you need to represent all people in the best interests of Wagga.
When I look at the candidate list, I must say I am impressed with the standard of all who have put their names forward.
Please be aware that if voting above the line, you will more than likely give your support to those who are first or second on the list.
Make your vote count to ensure a secure future, in the best interests of all people, not just those who are closely associated with a particular councillor.
This election will see only nine councillors elected, so I suggest you take the time to vote under the line and ensure we see only open-minded councillors elected.
