Wagga was among the first three hospitals in Australia selected for the new beds, which have a built-in weighing sytem and expandable size.
Nursing and midwifery director Grant Carey-Ide said the region’s higher rate of obesity wasn’t the only reason for the new bariatric beds.
Wagga had been selected as part of the overall upgrade of its facilities.
“Certainly the Australian phenomenon of increasing obesity was part of the thinking and planning of the new hospital,” he said.
The new beds would not add to the hospital’s capacity but instead replace older beds that cannot hold larger patients, Mr Carey-Ide said.
