Scouts spend night in the snow in igloo adventure
Last weekend, 46 Scouts from eight troops across the Riverina enjoyed perfect conditions for a snow camp at Cabramurra.
Scouts from Kooringal and Wagga joined with Leeton, Hay, Gundagai, Griffith, West Wyalong and Murrumbateman Scouts for a fun weekend of tobogganing, snow hiking, and of course, snowman making and the exchange of many a flying snowball.
The Cabramurra Scout Lodge provides Scouts from across the Riverina with the unique opportunity to experience snow adventures right at its doorstep, with Cabramurra being the highest inhabited town in Australia.
A highlight of the weekend was learning snow survival skills through the building of igloos.
Pictured is Holly Mack and Lily Carroll of 1st Wagga Scouts, who braved the minus two degrees and snow conditions to spend the night in the igloo they had built with the help of other Scouts.
The two Scouts emerged the next morning happy and dry, a strong testament to the quality of their building structure.
The motto of Scouts is to be prepared for new adventure, and these Scouts definitely embraced that creed.
Dine among the art at Holbrook art show
Everyone’s invited to enjoy dining among the art at Holbrook Rotary Club’s Art Show.
Come along and see what artists in the bush are creating – 300 art works from more than 50 artists.
Held annually for 46 years, the art show raised funds over $6000 in 2015 for our Rotary community projects.
A popular section of the art show is the children’s art and for the first time this year, young people from Greater Hume Shire who participated in the creative writing project will have their framed stories on display.
The exhibition is open Monday to Friday from noon to 5pm, Saturday to Sunday from 10am to 4pm. Dine among the art at the opening - $30 per head and $20 for exhibiting artists and concession. Daily entry: adults $5, concession $2. Special arrangements can be made outside given hours by groups.
Jacob off to represent at WorldSkills
Wagga student Jacob Dunne will compete against the nation’s best young joiners in October at the 2016 WorldSkills Australia National Competition in Melbourne.
After winning last year’s regional competition, the 20-year-old will represent the Riverina in the quest for a coveted spot on the Australian Skilleroos team, which will take part in the 2017 international competition.
Jacob, who is studying Certificate III in Shopfitting at TAFE NSW Riverina Institute’s Wagga Campus, said he was looking forward to the national competition and would be working hard in preparation for the event.
