A-League heavyweight Sydney FC has signed its first regional partnership with Football Wagga, providing the final link in the chain for aspiring Socceroos and Matildas in Wagga.
“We want those kids to see there is a pathway to play for Sydney FC,” Sydney FC spokesman Paul Reid said.
“Not many of them will, but if they put in the hard work, they can see there’s a stepping-stone.”
The former Socceroo hopes the partnership will encourage Wagga kids to choose soccer over Aussie Rules or rugby league.
“There’s been an issue down here, where kids have branched-off into different sports at certain ages,” he said.
“We want as many kids as possible playing soccer and developing a love for the game. If they’re going to pick a sport, we want them to pick soccer. It’s a really safe sport and parents are thinking about that these days.
“We want to give them an opportunity where they can come to Sydney FC games, where they can walk out with a Sydney FC player, they can play at half-time on the field at Alliance Stadium. Anything like that will get the kids excited.
“At the end they will hopefully support Sydney FC.”
Each year, two or three Wagga City Wanderers players will be invited to train with and trial for Sydney FC academy teams.
Sydney FC will also host its annual school holiday clinic in Wagga, drawing upwards of 600 kids to the region.
