The PARKROYAL Darling Harbour was voted the Sydney Superior Hotel of the Year, while Fairmont Resort Blue Mountains won Regional Superior Hotel of the Year.

The award for Mid-range Hotel of the Year went to Atura​ Blacktown, which also won Brasserie/Cafe of the Year for its Roadhouse Bar and Grill.

Chairman of TAA NSW, Peter Tudehope, said the excellent quality of all nominees and winners showed the high standards of the tourism accommodation industry in NSW.

"NSW truly is setting a high benchmark for the rest of Australia, and indeed internationally, when it comes to accommodation hotels," he said.

The awards are made as the sector is under the spotlight from investors as more than $3.8 billion worth of assets have changed hands across Asia Pacific in the six months to June 30, according to data from JLL Hotel's investment report.

In Australia, the highest deals were the Hilton Hotel and Westin Sydney for more than $400 million each, while in Melbourne the last sale was the Park Hyatt in 2014, which was picked up by China's Fu Wah International Group for $135 million.

LaSalle Investment Management is also selling the 9000-square-metre shopping centre and neighbouring 380-room Novotel Melbourne hotel for about $500 million. It has been suggested the Singaporean-based Frasers Centrepoint could be the buyer.

The JLL report says this is a 13.2 per cent rise in the same period last year as yields recovered to pre-global financial crisis levels.

Mike Batchelor, managing director for JLL's Hotels & Hospitality Group Asia Pacific, said there remains a weight of capital chasing "quality real estate assets".

"The top 10 single-asset transactions in the first six months of this year collectively amounted to almost $1.7 billion. Japan led with $2.1 billion, followed by Australia ($278 million), Mainland China ($252.6 million), Vietnam ($237.6 million), Taiwan ($217.6 million) and Thailand ($138.3 million)," Mr Batchelor said.

He added that the weaker British pound, following Brexit, may impact outbound travel from Britain, however, Chinese travellers remain a key contributor to tourism in Asia Pacific.

In Australia, Asian buyers continue to be attracted by relatively higher property yields and the safe haven of proven investment markets in Australian and New Zealand. Long-term visitor growth from China remains an important investment theme in Australia, according to Mark Durran, managing director, JLL's Hotels & Hospitality Group in Australasia.

He said overall, domestic investors in the region dominated capital flows, accounting for 80 per cent of all deals above $5 million.

"Australasia continues to attract the highest capital inflows with cross border investors emerging as the dominant purchasers of hotel real estate over recent years," Mr Durran said.
