But coming off back-to-back WNBL titles with Townsville, the Canberra Capitals' latest recruit wants to bring that winning mentality to the rebuilding team.

The 26-year-old guard is the second cousin of Australian legend Andrew, her father Mark played for Australia, her mother Michelle O'Connor won a WNBL title with Coburg and her grandfather Tony is a former Opals coach.

Although she wants to forge her own legacy, she's yet to tire of talking about her family's.

"I don't get sick of it, obviously it gets brought up a lot but I'm very proud of it," she said.

"The basketball knowledge my whole family has I draw from on a daily basis.

"My grandpa coached the Australian women's team and I'm fortunate to be living near him at the moment [playing for Queensland Basketball League team Logan].

"I do individuals with him every Wednesday and he comes to every single one of my games.

"He's 81 but still runs and gets my rebounds. He has a lot of things to say, good and bad, about every game we play."

Gaze and Capitals coach Paul Goriss have a close bond forged 10 years ago through the Australian Institute of Sport basketball system.

Goriss was the men's assistant coach when Gaze was part of the girls' squad.

"At one stage at the AIS he had a picture of my face on the door which basically said Gazey's not allowed in here because she's too loud and talks too much," Gaze said.

"With [Capitals teammate] Marianna Tolo making the Olympic team, I went to the AIS with her and am really excited about reconnecting with her as well.

"Playing in Townsville it's hard not to learn in that environment but moving to Canberra I'm hoping to get more opportunity to play and maybe create something special with a new team."

Gaze spent five years at Saint Mary's College, renowned for its strong Australian pedigree including NBA stars Patty Mills and Matthew Dellavedova, before signing with Townsville.

She has played mainly at point guard but is expected to spend plenty of time at shooting guard to accommodate Lauren Mansfield as the main ball handler.

"I think she's a combo guard because she can shoot it," Goriss said.

"She's come off the back of winning back-to-back championships and although Gazey is still young she's had the experience of playing in big-time games which will stand her in good stead.

"With her shooting, being a good teammate and big match experience, it's a package we thought was important for our group."

The Capitals have now finalised nine of their 12-player roster, with finding a replacement for departing Opal Stephanie Talbot and a back-up big for Tolo the main priorities.
