He has yet to be sentenced for criminal misconduct but corrupt former Labor minister Eddie Obeid is already planning to appeal his guilty verdict, in the latest legal battle being waged by the septuagenarian.

Obeid, 72, was found guilty on June 28 of misconduct in public office for concealing his family's interest in two Circular Quay cafe leases when lobbying a senior bureaucrat to secure lucrative lease renewals.

It was the first major conviction to result from a string of high-profile corruption inquiries in NSW, kicked off by the Independent Commission Against Corruption in late 2012.

A jury found Obeid guilty after a three-week trial and deliberations spanning a handful of hours. It was the second trial for the former upper house MP, whose first trial was aborted on February 24 after fresh evidence came to light which altered the course of the trial.

Obeid's legal team lodged a notice of intention to appeal his conviction in the Court of Criminal Appeal a day after the verdict, on June 29.

His lawyers had worked furiously behind the scenes to delay or shut down the trial, including by arguing that the court did not have jurisdiction to hear any case of misconduct in public office.

They claimed only the NSW upper house, where Obeid served as an MP for 20 years, could determine the case.

Obeid remains on bail pending his sentencing by Justice Robert Beech-Jones. The parties are expected to make submissions on sentence on August 12 and the Crown has already said it will press for a jail sentence.

The former Labor MP and his family are embroiled in a string of costly legal battles.

Along with his sons Moses, Paul and Eddie jnr, Obeid is suing the ICAC, former Commissioner David Ipp, QC and counsel assisting Geoffrey Watson, SC, for damages over a string of inquiries they claim caused them "reputational harm" and "significant stress, mental anxiety, and injury". The case is slated to begin on August 1.

Members of the Obeid family, including family matriarch Judith, most of the couple's children and dozens of grandchildren, are challenging a multimillion-dollar tax bill in the Federal Court.

The Tax Office kicked off an audit of Obeid snr and a complex web of family trusts and companies in February 2013, after a string of explosive allegations at the ICAC.
