The Bushpigs have had two wins this year and have their sights set on doubling that in the last third of the season.
“We’ve got six games to go, we’ve had our second bye and our target is to win four or five games for the year,” coach Daniel Athanitis said.
“We want to put ourselves in a strong position for next year… and it starts tomorrow (Saturday).”
Their last six games are against teams ranked second to seventh – beginning with the Northern Jets at Peter Hastie Oval on Saturday.
“They’re a good side – they give us a bit of touch-up in the first round so we’ll be up against it,” Athanitis said.
“We get a few back in from holidays so we’re confident we can compete. We let ourselves down a little bit in the second half in how we competed (against East Wagga-Kooringal last game) but we certainly feel as though there’s wins in the second half of the year.”
Jets co-coach Sam Fisher says they won’t run the risk of taking CSU lightly, noting how close they came to beating Marrar and North Wagga last month.
“We’re well aware they’re playing good footy, and we’re going in with as strong a side as we can,” Fisher said, pointing out it’s a crucial four points on offer for the fourth-placed Jets.
“There’s a few blokes going in with niggly injuries but we can’t afford to rest anyone. There’s no rest now til our bye.
“If we can get a win there that should keep us two wins clear of North Wagga and it could put us a game clear of Marrar and give us a bit of breathing space.
“We’ve got East Wagga next week as well so we’ve got to keep ticking away and win the ones that we should win.”
