A man, who couldn’t find a job, walked past the circus. Out the front was a sign “WORKER WANTED”. He met with the manager who sat him down and said. “Your job will be to get dressed up in the gorilla suit and prance around in the cage all day and roar at people as they pass.” “The gorilla isn’t real?” the unemployed man asks. The manger laughed and said “Are you a clown? No circus has a real gorilla! Imagine the mayhem if one of those things escaped?”

The man felt heartbroken and lied to, but he needed a job, so he took it.
So he’s in the gorilla suit and in the cage. A family walked past and he let out only a little “Grr!” and the whole family were frightened. Another family walked by and he growled a little louder and they almost jump out of their skin. The manager who is watching all this says to himself “This guy’s got potential!” So within a few days the gorilla was the star attraction at the circus and the once unemployed man’s confidence was sky high. The gorilla was swinging from the trapeze and roaring every night and the people just loved it. But one night he got a bit too sure of himself. As he was swinging and growling, he took one of his hands off the trapeze to bang his chest, but his other hand slipped off the bar too. He fell down and landed in the lion’s cage with his face right in front of the lion’s mouth. He screamed in fear at the top off his voice, “Help!” Then, from the lion’s mouth he heard a whisper “Be quiet you idiot! Or we’ll both lose our jobs!”
Okay, enough monkey business. We are all looking for the real in life and it is true to say that we prefer to be told the truth rather than be lied to. Our minds were built for truth, they are attracted to truth, and that’s half-truths are the most dangerous deceptions of all.
With the upcoming election, although we all joke about all politicians being liars, in truth, it would be wonderful to know which ones are telling us the truth. Broken promises are almost always deplorable, but especially when they are broken by those in authority. When it comes to entertainment, it doesn’t really matter if something is true or make believe, real or magic, because entertainment is often an escape from reality. But in reality, whether the story is true or false is significant. If someone lies to us, they are not to be trusted.
We all understand the basic principle of exercise: the more you do it, the easier it is to do. This is also true of intellectual exercise. The more you train and use your brain to think each day the better your brain will think each day. That’s why students who don’t study find it almost impossible to study. What we can sometimes forget is that there is such a thing as moral exercises too. The more we tell the truth, the better we will get at telling the truth. The less we lie, the worse we will get at lying.
In each election, as with the selection of any position of leadership, we are almost always forced to turn to prayer as it is hard to know who will lead us better. When the apostles had to choose between two candidates to replace Judas, they prayed first, for even the apostles were unsure who would make the better leader.
I could be wrong, but I often think it does not matter so much who has the better leadership skills but matters more who is the most honest leader; for a dishonest leader is not leader.
When we watch parliament it’s often a circus; but these are the men and women deciding our future. It is worth our time to educate ourselves as to who will perform and who will land us in the lion’s den.
