Nine months after defeating Waratahs 30-24 in the most important game of the year, the Steamers were on the end of a 104-point drubbing by their Wagga rivals.

While admitting an impressive victory margin counts for little, coach Will Mitchell was still pleased with his team’s efforts.

“As much as it means nothing, it does mean a lot,” Mitchell said.

“Meggo (Matt Meggison) said it pretty well after the game as there is still a few scars from 2013 and 2015 and losing grand finals to those guys.

“Not that it means anything at the end of the day, but we are stoked.”

Mitchell has been at the club for the past six years and couldn’t recall a bigger victory margin.

Last year, Albury were on the other end of some equally impressive scorelines, however things have quickly changed.

They defeated Ag College by 101 points but after losing the majority of its premiership stars, have slumped to seventh and have only won twice this season.

Waratahs are yet to suffer defeat this season, but that didn’t stop coach Will Mitchell tinkering with their game plan.

Adding in some new attacking structures during the mid-season break, Mitchell was pleased to see how quickly the side adapted to the changes.

“The new structures we had given the boys over the break, they molded to really well,” he said.

“It gives us a lot of faith knowing we did things right as a coaching staff.

“The players are obviously buying into it and we are getting good results.

“It is good to know we are heading in the right direction.”

Meggison was one of the standouts for the team.

Mitchell described at as easily the second rower’s best of the season.

The move of Sean Kearnes into flanker was another positive change.

Justin Shortis was damaging on the wing, scoring four tries and getting through plenty of work, while Mitchell was impressed with the performance of Jasper Grant on debut.

Grant was given his shot at first grade and made an immediate impact.

Coming off the bench he scored off his opening touch of the ball and also set up a nice try for Angus Le Lievre.

Le Lievre crossed for four tries himself to finish with a personal tally of 56 points.
