Despite Finding Dory, the sequel to the hugely popular Finding Nemo, splashing onto cinema screens, Bob’s Birdz-n-Pets owner Darren Wood said there were no plans to stock regal blue tangs.
Mr Wood said marine fish like Dory require skill to keep and a serious investment in time and money.
“Their tanks need regular maintenance … you need to know how to adjust water chemistry and how to fix problems quickly,” Mr Wood said.
With blue tangs growing up to 30 centimetres, Mr Wood said a tank needed to be at least 400 litres.
“Clownfish like Nemo are different, they’re a captive breed, most blue tangs are harvested from the wild.” Mr Wood said amateur fish keepers were better off starting with freshwater fish, “start with something basic and go from there.”
