War experience: After a warm farewell in Wagga from family and friends, James sailed from Sydney aboard the Ceramic. In Egypt, he received additional training as a bomb thrower.
Life afterwards: After serving on the Western Front for over three years with the 55th Battalion, James returned to Australia in June, 1919.
His brother George was killed in action in 1917.
James died in 1968.
