“A lot of it is being out on the road,” he said.
The policeman of 16 years was last year’s overall winner of the Wagga Wagga Police Officer of the Year Awards, a “proud” moment of his long career.
Sergeant Sheaff joined members of the police force and community to mark the opening of this year’s nominations on Wednesday morning.
The awards, now in their third year, recognise outstanding acts of devotion, courtesy, courage and compassion by members of the force across the region.
Sergeant Sheaff, who is team leader of the Wagga Police proactive crimes unit, received the award last year after being anonymously nominated for “ongoing leadership”.
“I was very proud of winning, obviously there was a lot of other good nominees, so to be picked out of them as the overall winner was very nice.” he said.
Sergeant Sheaff said he planned to pay the recognition forward and nominate a few fellow police officers for the award. “There’s been a lot of good police work in the last 12 months,” he said.
Nominations are open until July 15, and can be filled out online at www.waggapoliceawards.org.au, or via forms available at Wagga Police Station and Wagga City Council Chambers.
