In light of their contribution to soccer, a local club is raising funds to prevent women’s cancer on Saturday.
“I think we’ve all been touched in one shape or form by cancer,” Wagga United president Ian Hardinge said.
“The women’s teams add so much value to the club.
“Our committee is predominately female; they’re very active with all of our fundraising and events.
“They’re vitally important.”
Wagga United held its first successful ‘Pink Round’ last season, raising over $5,500 for the Cancer Council Pink Ribbon Foundation.
The club hopes to surpass the amount raised in 2015.
First-grade senior teams will be involved, with women wearing pink socks and the men wearing pink shirts.
The formalities commence at 1pm at Rawlings Park with the women’s game and continue as reserve-grade men play at 3pm and first-grade men play at 5pm.
Sixteen shirts will be auctioned at a function at the William Farrer Hotel following the game.
Spectators are encouraged to wear something pink to the games, and collection buckets will be handed around the venue.
The first-grade men have a challenge on their hands as they face top-four team Lake Albert.
Lake Albert coach Michael Babic anticipates a hard game.
“I know their back-line has only conceded six goals,” he said.
“That will be a good test.”
