Just two months remain in the racing season and Cavanough holds an eight-win lead as he chases an 11th Southern District Racing Association (SDRA) trainer’s premiership.
Sutherland sits in second on 25 wins, with a further five wins back to Jerilderie trainer Phil Sweeney in third.
Cavanough hopes the eight-win margin will prove enough.
“I’ve got a bit of ammunition,” Cavanough said.
“Hopefully I can sneak one or two this weekend with a bit of luck and that should make a difference.”
Cavanough has nominated four horses for Albury’s Sky Two meeting on Saturday, where as Sutherland has 10 among the entries.
There are still 12 race meetings scheduled in the SDRA before the end of the season.
Meantime in the jockey’s ranks, John Kissick is destined for his third SDRA premiership.
Kissick has 37 SDRA wins to his name and is six clear of Nick Heywood, who is now based in Sydney with the Snowden stable.
Kissick is set for a move to Canberra soon but will continue to ride in the Southern District.
Apprentice Brooke Sweeney sits on third with 25 wins.
