The 15-year-old, who cannot be named because he is under 18, was sentenced in Wagga Children’s Court on Friday.

The teenager – already disqualified from driving – celebrated New Year’s Day by taunting police in several high-speed pursuits in stolen cars and terrifying bicycle riders.

The first escapade began about 1.45am when police saw the boy driving a stolen Landcruiser in Ashmont.

Police alleged speeds of up to 100 kilometres an hour were reached and the boy drove on the wrong side of the road in Edward Street.

Four pursuits were called off because of danger to the public.

Escaping the clutches of police, the boy was next seen in a stolen Toyota Corolla in Ashmont Avenue about 7.30am.

He drove the car so close to a cyclist that one of the passengers in the car grabbed the cyclist’s backpack and dragged him along.

The cyclist was able to break free and rode onto the median strip in Ashmont Avenue in an attempt to escape, only to have the car follow him.

Once that cyclist escaped, the boy turned his attention to another rider, turning the car so the rider had to brake harshly to avoid a head-on collision.

The driver then tail-gated the cyclist before turning into a side street.

Acting on complaints about the menacing driving, police soon found the Toyota.

On-and-off pursuits followed during which the boy swerved at two parked police cars, drove through roundabouts on the wrong side of the road and reached speeds of up to 97km/h in 50km/h residential streets.

He and passengers in the car abandoned it in Callaghan Street and jumped over fences towards Marshall Street. He was arrested at home.

The boy was convicted of seven offences, including police pursuit, driving while disqualified and menacing driving.

He was given a 26-month aggregate control order, with 13 months’ non-parole, backdated to January 23.
