A university in England has become the latest institution to ban the toss, going as far as to offering to add Photoshopped mortarboards to graduation photos, according to reports, but students studying at Charles Sturt University can still look forward to doing the real thing.
Wagga head of campus Miriam Dayhew said CSU made a move to use disposable mortarboards in the interest of public health, but had the added benefit of reducing the weight of the headwear meaning less danger to students being blindsided.
“Mortarboard tossing is part of the student’s enjoyment of graduation,” Ms Dayhew said, adding the police graduation was particularly impressive.
“The old ones had hard tops and were incredibly heavy.”
