When it comes to health and safety in a medical environment, staff play a key role in commitment to compliance to ensure they and patients remain safe.

When Regional Imaging regional manager Nic Carusella accepted the Crow Award for Excellence in Workplace Health and Safety, he said he couldn’t be prouder of its staff in developing a strong workplace health and safety culture.

“It was a very proud moment to accept it for the organisation; we are lucky to have staff such as our work health safety and risk manager Vickie Kendall, who crosses our T’s and dots our I’s, as well as staff who have developed such a strong culture of commitment to complying with policies,” he said.

Regional Imaging are focused on providing ‘comprehensive care, uncompromising quality’ at all levels of operation to ensure its 100 strong workforce remains safe and consistently provide patients with the care and quality they expect.

All new staff are provided with a comprehensive orientation program prior to their commencement, and are always up-to-date with compulsory annual workplace health and safety training and assessment.

A health and safety representative is elected from each imaging area. 

The representatives meet and conduct workplace inspections bi-monthly where any identified safety concerns undergo a risk assessment, facilitating regular review of work practices and ensuring a safe environment.  

The Regional Imaging clinics maintain all standard office workplace safety precautions but also unique precautions relating specifically to surgical procedures and radiation dose safety.

Specific policies and procedures are implemented to protect patients and staff from blood-born disease and radiation dose exposure.

Particular health and safety attention is required in the use of injectable radiation isotopes in their Nuclear Medicine departments and screening patients entering the Magnetic Resonance Imaging department.
