Hopper has managed to force his way into the red-hot Giants team for Saturday’s clash with Gold Coast Suns at Spotless Stadium.
It is a dream come true for the 19-year-old.
“It’s been a lifelong dream of mine to play AFL footy,” Hopper said.
“Ever since I started playing Auskick at a young age I’ve always wanted to play AFL football so to get the chance to do that now is sensational.
"I can’t wait to give it a crack.”
Hopper was told the news at a team meeting on Wednesday and was quickly on the phone to his father James.
The news was made public on Thursday night when the round eight AFL teams were announced.
“It’s obviously very exciting,” Hopper said.
“I’ve got itchy feet already, I can't wait to get out there on Saturday.
“I got told in front of all of the boys, which was really nice, it took me by surprise a bit.
“I’m very happy to be able to tick it off.”
After being picked up at selection number seven at the AFL Draft last November, Hopper has averaged 31 possessions in four appearances for the Giants reserves at NEAFL level.
He missed a game a fortnight ago with an injured neck, and then was GWS’ travelling emergency for the trip to Perth last weekend to play Fremantle.
Hopper cannot wait to soak up the experience.
“Just being part of it all,” he said.
“Hopefully I can play my role, get a bit of the footy and get the win.”
Hopper expects to spend time in the midfield, as well as up forward.
“I’ll do anything I’m told to do really,” he said.
“The boys are playing really well and it helps when the boys coming in can fulfil their role so I’m keen to play some good footy hopefully.”
Hopper’s parents Deanna and James, along with brothers Zac and Sam, will travel to Sydney for the big moment on Saturday.
