Grand Proposal ran fourth but suffered a suspected fractured sesamoid which saw the mare put down shortly after the race.
Queanbeyan trainer Neville Layt was in tears when the sheets were put up around the mare.
Grand Proposal was a promising mare who won her last two races at Wagga leading up to the Gold Cup.
Murrumbidgee Turf Club CEO Scott Sanbrook said there had been less than a handful of incidents in the last 10 years at the Wagga track.
“It is a very sad and unfortunate incident,” he said.
“It is very upsetting for all those connected with the horse.”
Mr Sanbrook said the incident was the lowlight of the carnival.
“Racing is full of highlights but unfortunately there are some lowlights,” he said.
