And the veteran announcer has told The Daily Advertiser his secret to capturing the spirit of racing’s most memorable moments.

“You have to associate the silks of the jockeys with the different horses and take note of the tiny defining differences,” Mr Hull said.

“Then it’s all about your passion – you can’t do this without a genuine love of horse racing, it just doesn’t convey.”

And while the legendary announcer admits he can’t call the races forever, he said that he plans to “stick it out” until his memory and vision betray him. 

But Mr Hull is hopeful one of his grandchildren, who both adore racing, will take over the reigns when he hangs up the binoculars. 

“The kids are the first ones to the track, they can do whatever they want and I’ll be proud, but they have shown a strong interest,” he said. 

And Wagga’s most cherished race caller said if there’s one thing he hopes people learn from him; it’s that “class is everything”. 

“I’ve never called a race without a tie, through the hottest heat-waves and all, I’ve never forgotten it.”

Mr Hull plans to return for the 2017 carnival.
