On Friday, he will attempt to deliver on a second dream when he starts in the $150,000 listed Wagga Gold Cup (2000m).
Picked up for $14,000 at a tried horse sale, Mr Sommerville has provided Wagga trainer Trevor Sutherland and his connections with a great deal of fun since joining his stable in late 2014.
Mr Sommerville was first emergency in the Cup after some disappointing performances this preparation and when the spot came up in the field, the opportunity to stick to the original plan was too good to resist.
“His prep all the way along has been for the Cup,” Sutherland said.
“I’m pretty happy with him. I was a little bit disappointed with his run the other day but we led and things we didn’t want to do.
“I think the blinkers coming back off will help immensely.”
Sutherland expects Mr Sommerville to enjoy a far easier run in transit than recent starts.
“Every race he’s been in lately, there has been some mad tearaway leader and we’ve ended up having to be the horse to chase the field up, where as (Friday) with a good speed, out of the gate we can just drop over, do nothing and hopefully let him drag us into it.
“Because if you take his last run out, the rest of his runs have been pretty good.”
Sutherland said there will be no excuses in the Cup.
“He’s as good as I’ve had him this prep, and he has to be,” he said.
