Since entering the stables of Cranbourne trainer Shawn Mathrick this preparation, the five-year-old gelding by Lonhro has proven a fantastic buy.
Mathrick purchased the gelding for a meagre $16,000 at an Inglis Godolphin tried horse sale and has won four races from eight starts this preparation.
“He was a steal,” Mathrick said. “Before we bought him I had a look at his form and he’d shown ability but for some reason just wasn’t performing and trained off.
“My old man always said ‘good horses don’t lose their ability just form.’
“I just think coming to a paddock environment at Cranbourne, free range when he kick about in a big yard has made the difference. His mind is relaxed.
“He’s just thrived.”
Adirondack is coming off a highly impressive five length win last start in the VOBIS Gold Heath, a 2000m event at Caulfield on April 16.
He treated his rivals with disdain after taking the lead on straightening and racing right away from them.
“It was a super win,” Mathrick said. “He just dominated them. The way he won exceeded expectations. His last 400 metres was unbelievable.
“He’s pulled up super and done really well at home. He’s strong, drops 5 kilos on his last start win, likes the trip and he should get a perfect run near the pace from the barrier (eight).
“There are a lot of positives. Hopefully it’s a happy ending.”
