It was a win to the locals as Brad Clark guided Kingia home to score for Wagga trainer Peter Morgan in the Quest Apartments Wagga Class Two Handicap (1400m).
Kingia ($6.00) held off fellow Wagga galloper Gentleman Max ($15.00) by a half neck, with a nose to $3.30 favourite Ziganui in third place.
Morgan is a man of a few words but he was pleased to take a Town Plate day win.
“We haven’t had a winner at the carnival for a while so it’s good to get one of the features,” Morgan said.
“She’s been held up late at her last few runs so she deserved this one. Brad did a marvellous job.”
Clark said it was a well-deserved win for the mare.
“She’s had a lot of bad luck in most her starts,” Clark said.
“The other day was my first ride on her, she got in behind the leaders and I just couldn’t get out.
“Today, she had a lovely run, I made sure I stayed off the fence so I didn’t get boxed in, I peeled out when I wanted to and she done the rest.”
Clark was happy to get a winner on Town Plate day for the second consecutive year.
“It’s great to win on these days and get your name out there a bit,” he said.
“I think it’s great that local trainers, especially this year, have stuck solid with local jockeys.
“It’s easy for them to wipe us on these days when you get your Blake Shinns and all the big wigs coming down so I take my hat off to the trainers who have stayed loyal and put us local fellas on.”
