The defending premiers won 9.7(61) to 4.4(28).
A low-scoring first quarter showed Mater Dei they’d have to work for it. But the floodgates opened in the second quarter for Mater Dei who looked more dominant, and capitalised off TRAC’s poor disposal, winning the quarter by 19 points.
Mater Dei coach Nathan Irvine was pleased with his squad’s work rate. The difference between winning and losing was their run through the midfield according to Irvine.
“Getting the ball into our forward line more often gave us more opportunities,” he said.
Mater Dei’s Joel Burton suffered concussion in the third quarter, and was stretchered off.
TRAC clawed back, their backs winning possession from strong second efforts and forwards taking advantage of rare moments in the attacking zone but the game belonged to Mater Dei.
Earlier on, last year’s Pool B winners Kooringal High easily accounted for Mount Austin. Using Scott Barlin as a target upfront, the squad full of Aussie Rules players won 27.18(180) to 1.1(7).
Kooringal led by 55 at the first turn, and with the ball only entering Mount Austin’s inside 50 a handful of times throughout the game, the underdogs didn’t have much of a look-in. Kooringal had more players in the contest and a taller team able to spoil Mount Austin’s disposal.
Kooringal coach Andrew Schmetzer commended Mount Austin on fielding a team, despite being short a few players.
“We shared our best players because it’s all about kids playing sport,” Schmetzer said.
