The Stars, who had a first round defeat at the hands of reigning premier, New Kids Aces, play Uranquinty who are making their 2016 debut, after enjoying the bye in the opening round.
Quite a few of the Shooting Stars players formerly played with Uranquinty, so there could be a bit of spice in Saturday’s game.
To the fore in that group are Jemima Norbury at goal defence and goal shooter, Olivia Lang. Norbury is one of the competition’s most consistent defenders, while the height of Lang is always difficult to counter by opposing defenders.
The Stars were impressed with the performance of their youngsters, Flynn Hogg and Hayley Stevens, in their top grade debut last week, and will hope that they can continue in the same vein throughout the season. Centre court players, Michelle Forrell, Jenee West and Brodie Jaques, provide good link between defence and attack, while Ruby Gooden is a class player who belies her young age.
Uranquinty will look to the majority of last season’s team to carry on from where they left off last year.
They will look to sister duos, Hannah and Ella Finemore and Brooke and Olivia Tilyard to show the way. Cousins, Meg Reinhold, Josie Daniher and Grace Cornell, have good blood lines and will be hard to match by the Stars, whilst in the shooting goal circle Lana Duffy and the recruited Paige Colenso should have a good tussle with the Stars’ Norbury and Gooden.
Former Griffith player, Tamika Scott, has immediately impressed, gaining selection in the Wagga U17 team and should soon find her way with her new team mates.
Everything points to a keen contest, with, perhaps, the experience of the Stars enabling them to take the points.
In the other fixture, first round winners, New Kids Aces, play Kooringal, who started their A grade comeback with a loss to Turvey Park.
There’s no doubting the class of the Aces’ team which has champion players in every third.
At the back end there are the experienced duo of Tracy Schulz-Cole and Lisa Reynoldson, well supported by the up-and-coming Rhiannon Podmore.
Up in the forward ring Lisa Frow and Paige Guthrie have few peers, whilst the centre court boasts players of the calibre of the evergreen Rachael Addison, the speedy Abbeys: Fellows and Corbett, and Mikaela Cole.
Kooringal will look to new defence players Shy Raihana and Melanie Kamoto to thwart the shooting power of Frow and Guthrie, while centre court players Morgan Davy, Maddison Kelly and Lauren Cooper will have to be at their best.
While New Kids will start as favourites, Kooringal will make them earn their expected win.
