Passing motorists contacted police just after 8am when they discovered a vehicle on its roof in bushland off Mary Gilmore Way, about 30 kilometres from Coolamon, shortly after 8am.

It is unknown how long before motorists came across the burning vehicle that the single-vehicle crash had actually occurred.

Wagga police duty officer, Inspector Andrew Spliet, confirmed the vehicle veered off the road, crashed into several trees before coming to rest on its roof and catching alight.

The sole occupant of the vehicle, believed to be a 22-year-old from a town near the Victorian border, died instantly. 

The horrifying crash is the fourth fatal accident on the region’s roads in just three weeks. 

It follows the death of an 18-year-old woman near Maude on April 12, a 23-year-old man near Yass on April 19 and a 27-year-old man near Tumbarumba on April 21. 

Saturday’s accident closed Mary Gilmore Way at Burley Griffin Way in both directions for most of Saturday. 

Motorists using the road were detoured to Temora via Goldfields Way, as access to Coolamon via Mary Gilmore Road from Burley Griffin Way was cut.

Crime scene investigators remained on scene into the afternoon.

It is unknown whether fatigue was a factor.

Officers from Wagga Local Area Command will prepare a report for the information of the Coroner.
