Police will treat the fire as suspicious, with one neighbour declaring “somebody could have been killed”.
The owner, who was not home at the time, was uninjured, but all her possessions are now gone.
Firefighters were called to the scene on Mumford Street about 7.15am, taking them 20 minutes to bring the blaze under control.
They are yet to identify a cause.
One neighbour, Harold Kirby, said the owner was a “nice lady who has nothing now”.
“They need to crack down on all these things before somebody gets killed … (kids) need to be taken off the streets,” he said.
“It’s sad to see and it’s bloody frightening.”
Police launched Operation Assure, targeting youth crime, just days after another Ashmont house fire.
In that case, neighbours reported seeing two teens flee the scene with stolen goods as a wall of flames brought the home down behind them.
It was a flashpoint in the youth crime fight, with Wagga MP Daryl Maguire writing to the NSW Premier asking for more police resources after sustained community pressure.
