Ainslie and Dianne Carnie, of “Sunny Corner” on Old Narrandera Road, made a submission to Wagga City Council against plans to gazette the street M204 as Kerfoot Road.
“There is no disrespect to the person’s surname that has been suggested,” Ainslie penned in a letter to council.
“The reason we weren’t happy with this name is because for as long as I can remember the word kerfoot (some say kerput) is used when something is broken or not in working condition (in Aussie lingo “stuffed”).
But alternative name suggestions are inconsistent with NSW Road Naming Policy and council is forging ahead with the gazettal of Kerfoot Road.
“As you would know, the majority of the land bordering this part of the road is NSW State Forest and only two propoerty-owned blocks border the road,” the letter read.
“Our block – Ainslie and Dianne Carnie and adjoining block – David and Marita Maloy.”
Owners of the two properties suggested to council alternative street names.
“State Forest Road, Carloy Road (a combination of our surnames) or Carnies Road,” Ainslie said.
“If these are not suitable maybe you could include the Christian name to the suggested Kerfoot Road.”
After considering the submission, council maintains naming it State Forest Road would be inconsistent with council’s recently adopted Road Naming Policy.
Carlow and Carnies Road also violate the policy where the names of people who are still alive are not to be used.
“Kerfoot, pronounced Ker-Foot, is quite distinct from the pronunciation of the German word Kaputt pronounced Kaputt,” a council report stated.
“(We) see no reason to change the proposed road name based on this submission and therefore recommend that Council progress with the Gazettal of Kerfoot Road.”
Council receives numerous road naming and renaming requests and due to time and costs, the requests are dealt with in bulk every six months.
Other street name changes include the gazettal of Stapylton Place for the Old Section of Eunony Bridge Road and Yathong Street for the southern section of Lewis Drive.
Council is also looking to rename the section of the Gap Hall to Downside Road, Downside Road and Downside to Shepherd Siding Road to ‘Downside Road’.
