Howard has only been at Port Adelaide for about 14 months but they have already decided to re-sign him for an extra year, until the end of 2017.
He battled injury in the first part of 2015 but showed enough in the second half of the year at South Australian National Football League (SANFL) level.
"'Dougs' battled a stress fracture in the first half of the season, but he gave us something for the rest of the year, played in a couple of positions and has worked really hard on the track this summer,” Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley said.
Howard played 12 SANFL games in 2015.
