In just two years in the top job, Mazzocchi has delivered the Magpies back-to-back Farrer League deciders and the 2011 premiership in his first venture into coaching.
Having fallen at the final hurdle for the title against Temora a fortnight ago, Mazzocchi yesterday revealed he gave the club an out to pursue other options for next season after the grand final defeat.
Speaking to The Daily Advertiser yesterday, Mazzocchi admitted he had doubts the club would back him for a third term as coach.
“I had a bit to weigh up given the result at the end of the year, obviously being beaten in the grand final,” he said.
“I spoke to the club and told them if they wanted a new voice or a fresh approach or if they had a better direction, I gave them that option.
“They went and spoke about it and the committee and the president said they 100 per cent wanted me to do it again, and the players wanted me to do it again.
“Once you get that support it’s all really good.
“It was a good feeling, I gave them that option whether it was right or wrong but they came back with their support.”
Although the competition ended just a fortnight ago, Mazzocchi is already cooking up plans for next season.
Two years of experience with the Magpies has Mazzocchi well equipped to pinpoint the areas that need improving.
He said the first item on his agenda is securing the playing roster.
“The biggest thing we need to focus on now is re-signing every single player on our current players list,” he said.
“I’ve already put together some ideas, now we have to go back and recruit in certain areas and change our game plans a little bit.
"We need a fresh approach, not only to help our game style but to just freshen things up and give the boys something new to learn and keep the challenge there.”
Mazzocchi said the ultimate goal is to make a third straight grand final next season.
“The results will come but obviously we have to be targeting to stay at that level,” he said.
