Police from Rose Bay Local Area Command were called to Wentworth Road in Vaucluse after reports of a car crash just after 4am.

Police officers chased down four teenagers who had fled after they had crashed their Dodge luxury SUV into the barrier gate to the grounds of the heritage-listed Vaucluse House.

As a police officer attempted to make an arrest he was assaulted by one of the offenders, police said.

The officer was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to hospital suffering a concussion and facial injuries.

The car was not stolen, police said.

It is understood the car belongs to the mother of one of the teenagers.

The driver - on a provisional licence- was driving without his P-plates, Seven News reported.

Four males, three aged 17 and one aged 16, were taken to Waverley Police Station where they were questioned.

The 16-year-old was charged with assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest. A 17-year-old was charged with resisting arrest.

They were both bailed and are due to appear at Bidura Childrens Court on February 1.

The other two were released pending further enquiries.

A few hours after the arrest, the teenagers left the police station with hoods pulled over their heads and ran down the street. One of the boys shoved a cameraman into a tree as they barged past, while another shoved a female reporter and and cameraman out of his way.

It is the second alleged attack by teenagers on Sydney police officers in just over a week.

On New Year's Eve, three police officers were allegedly attacked during a random breath test in Sydney's west.

Three teenagers have been charged over the incident that left one police officer with a broken nose and two others with sprained wrists.

Police said a fight broke out after the officers issued an infringement notice to a 17-year-old P-plater for exceeding passenger restrictions.

The teenager allegedly threw the notice at police before assaulting the officer.

When a senior constable attempted to arrest the driver the three teens in the car allegedly assaulted him and the two other officers present.

The 17-year-old driver was arrested and charged with affray, assaulting a police officer occasioning actual bodily harm, and resisting arrest. He is due to appear in Parramatta Children's Court in January 21.

The 16 and 18-year-old were charged with affray, assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.

The 16-year-old was granted conditional bail and will also appear in children's court on January 21.

The 18-year-old was conditionally bailed and will appear in Blacktown Local Court on January 20.
