Attending nationals in January is an absolute must, as there will be selectors there from Australian teams and from American Colleges.
Kearnes has been training with the NSW under 19s team, and training’s about to intensify from twice to four times a week.
She describes herself as an aggressive, competitive player, and enjoys the responsibility of being pitcher.
“You have to be a lot fitter and smarter than other players to be able to pitch at that level,” Kearnes said.
Her most significant achievements on the field happened earlier this year.
“Probably winning nationals in January this year, and playing and winning the grand final in Wagga with my mother and sister in the same team,” she said.
In Sydney she can play softball all year round, but the US is holy grail, and she hopes to spend a year there playing college softball.
She will play for Davidson in the Manly competition alongside her cousins, “they’ve been chasing me for a couple of years,” she said.
Kearnes has been representing NSW since she was 13, honing her ball skills and fundraising skills too.
Her mum, Jane is running a crowd funding campaign to make nationals a possibility.
