But sometimes it is not just relief which people find in the water, with inland waterways and the ocean having their own dangers.
Surf life savers Adrienne Lowe and Greg Punch from Dee Why Surf Life Saving Club have toured Wagga schools this week teaching about everything from swimming between flags and sharks.
“I thought I could just go out there, so it was great to learn about rips,” student Harry Wilkinson said.
The students gave some advice to the ocean-goers when it comes to dams and rivers.
“Don’t rush into the river, take a look around, there could be snags,” Harry said.
Ms Lowe said statistics showed it was often country kids who got in trouble in rips as they looked for the calmer waters.
“We’re teaching kids to be aware of rips and if they’re aware of it, it makes it worthwhile,” she said.
Mr Punch said the messages shared over the past week would hopefully be shared with siblings and parents.
