The former Sheffield Shield cricketer and Riverina coach Owen Thompson met on Friday to discuss how to improve on the winless campaign at last week’s NSW country championships.
“Sometimes these things are cyclical but I don’t buy that as a reason for not playing well,” McLay said.
“Results from the last decade would suggest there’s plenty of scope for improvement in the Riverina.
“We’ve got to get away from thinking someone’s the best player in Wagga… they need to be competitive with the best in the state, producing players for NSW.”
McLay said improving resources, including coaching, for younger age groups is his focus, pointing out there are no Riverina players in his ACT/NSW Country under 19 team which is competing at nationals next week.
