News that TAB meetings in country NSW will carry a minimum $20,000 in prizemoney from July next year will renew confidence in the sport according to Wagga trainer, Wayne Carroll.
“It’s absolutely great news and it’s going to inject a lot more involvement and investment in racing,” Carroll said.
“It makes the whole industry more viable for people who are in the industry and can encourage more growth of people wanting to take it up.”
Carroll, who is the southern NSW representative for the state trainers’ association, said the organisation had made it clear that regional areas can’t be forgotten.
“Country people need to be looked after just as much as city people do,” Carroll said.
“There’s a lot of people who use racing as their ‘golf’ – people don’t mind spending money (on a hobby) but you need to be compensated for when you do get nice horses that can win races so they can pay for the slow ones we have.
“You don’t expect to make a million dollars in the country but you do need to be compensated.”
Carroll encouraged Racing NSW to value the importance of smaller race clubs and country cups after it committed approximately $50 million to capital works at country and provincial clubs.
