A Wagga veterinarian has warned dog owners to ensure their pets are vaccinated, with the city in the midst of a major outbreak of the deadly parvovirus.

Veterinarian Tristan Robinson, from the Wagga Veterinary Hospital, said this time of year traditionally saw a “massive spike” in the disease’s prevalence.
“(Not vaccinating) is uneducated naivety – people don’t think of the consequences of not getting vet care or vaccinating,” Dr Robinson said.
“(Parvovirus) is 99 per cent preventable with a cheap vaccine.”
Dr Robinson said it was important for new dog owners to ensure they had a vet ascertain their pet’s vaccination status.
Parvovirus is a highly contagious yet preventable disease that is life-threatening for dogs who contract it.
