The challenge, at Gundagai on the Murrumbidgee River, is now in its fourth year.
With a swag of cash and prizes for winners the competition attracts Australia’s finest horsemen and women.
Organisers say more than 70 competitors will line up and test their skills in an array of different disciplines.
“We have people travelling from far north Queensland, South Australia, Scone and beyond,” said Battle on the Bidgee committee member Zoe Sturt.
The challenge identifies versatile competitors who can excel in several different categories.
Some of the skills tested include whip cracking, bareback riding, pack horse, cross country, brumby catch and buck jumping.
Meanwhile, the Battle on the Bidgee offers plenty of action and entertainment for spectators.
Ms Sturt estimates more than 2500 people to flood through the gates at Gundagai on the weekend just to watch the competition.
One of the competitors to watch out for is Emma O’Shea who successfully won the ladies section of the Battle on the Bidgee last year.
The competitor who spends half the year in far north Queensland and the other six months at Tumut showed her dominance in the ladies section.
Miss O’Shea has also won the Man from Snowy River Challenge at Corryong.
She was also successful in winning the inaugural supreme starting challenge held in conjunction with the Shero’s Australian Stock Horse Stud sale and open day at Charles Sturt University earlier this year.
Battle on the Bidgee runs on October 9, 10, 11 at the Gundagai Showgrounds.
The Battle on the Bidgee is becoming one of the leading Stockman’s Challenges on the calendar in Australia.
Men, women and teenagers fight it out to become their own hero in the Battle on the Bidgee.
On Sunday finals events kick off at 10am with the top 10 open competitors, top three ladies and the top five juniors competing in the finals events including the junior time trial and steer ride, open and ladies brumby catch and the open stock saddle buckjump.
