The iconic tale of Spanish heat and gypsy passion unravels when naïve soldier Don Jose has his heart ignited by the fiery Carmen. Jose’s attempts to tame the freedom-loving beauty are futile, and when she leaves him for the famous Matador Escamillo, all three are engulfed in the flames of jealousy and revenge.
The Fortune Teller reveals to Carmen her ill-fated future: death at the hands of Don Jose.
Choreographer Natalie Weir is known internationally for her highly physical partner work, her organic movement style and her touching insight into humanity.
She has created more than 170 professional works in her 30-year career, including major new works for world class companies such as The Australian Ballet, Queensland Ballet, West Australian Ballet, Houston Ballet, Singapore Dance Theatre, Hong Kong Ballet and American Ballet Theatre.
You may have seen her work in 2013 when the incredibly beautiful production of R&J was part of the Civic Theatre subscription season. Her signature works with EDC have earned 10 Helpmann Award nominations.
Natalie said she was thrilled to be sharing one of the company’s most loved productions with audiences across Australia.
“It’s such a fiery story of passion and revenge and audiences quickly find themselves engulfed in it,” she said.
“The Carmen story has all the elements for great dance: passion, love, revenge, jealousy, betrayal and even murder.”
In the lead up to its regional tour of Carmen, EDC has travelled to participating venues to audition young dancers for the fantastic opportunity to perform with EDC onstage during the performance.
In Wagga, six dancers have been selected to perform, they are: Riley Ashcroft, Emma Meiklejohn, Alicia Rynehart, Grace Mattingly, Keeley Burgess and Lidia Grigg. The dancers have been rehearsing under the direction of Kathryn Fisher. (Keeley is also part of the cast for the Civic Theatre’s community production Legally Blonde)

Get the Taste of Hamlet at theatre
Welcome to Elsinore, a place threatened by secret tyranny where no one is safe from prying eyes and eavesdropping. All are under constant surveillance.
Tormented by indecision and haunted by his mother’s perceived crime, Hamlet knows that dark acts result in darker consequences. There is little that’s darker than the act of revenge.
Off the back of directing the critically acclaimed, award winning Henry V in 2014, Damien Ryan delivers a new production of Hamlet, one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies.
Anguish, passion and desperation collide in this tragic telling of Hamlet, touring nationally to 29 venues. The production will be in Wagga on Saturday, October 10 at 7.30pm (the duration of this performance is three hours).
A message from Bell Shakespeare
Shakespeare’s work explores human experience at its limits. It was never just meant to be read. We believe the only way to truly appreciate his work is to see it brought to life through live performance.
