Spirited bidding during the opening of the 37th annual on-property Merino ram sale at the Willandra Stud set the scene for the purchase.
The ram, 008 was grand champion March-shorn ram at the Royal Adelaide Show this year.
He had graduated through the strong wool class to be champion March shorn strong wool ram.
Willandra Merino Stud principal, Ross Wells said the ram had fantastic conformation with brilliant wool.
"He is the type of ram Merino breeders in Western Australia and South Australia are looking for," Mr Wells said.
"And he is ideal for their conditions."
The ram is by GP – a ram sold to Geoff Peters of Ballatherie Poll Merinos, Hillston in 2011 – for $22,000.
Willandra 008 has an Eye Muscle Depth of 47mm which was 3mm ahead of the other entarnts in the all-purpose class at Bendigo Sheep Show this year.
His mean micron measured 20.6 and C/F of 99.8.
Purchased by a West Australian syndicate represented by Clinton Blight, Seymour Park Merinos, Highbury the losing bidder was Nigel Kerin of Kerin Poll Merinos, Yeoval.
A total of 85 rams were sold of the 100 offered for an overall sale average of $3661.
