One of the most decorated careers in Riverina football history will come to an end when the Demons play their final game for the year.

A five-time league best and fairest, Aiken has decided to hang up the boots on his own terms.

Aiken returned from a knee injury to play his part in Collingullie’s elimination final win over Coolamon last Sunday and hopes they can win another three to bow out with another flag.

“I think we’re in the mix,” Aiken said.

“There is four teams left and any of the four teams on their day, their best footy is good enough to win it.

“It would be sensational to go out with a flag but we’ve got to get past Leeton first and we’ll want to be playing our best footy to beat them.”

Aiken, 37, played junior rugby league for Kangaroos before crossing to Australian rules at 15.

He has gone on to play 377 games for Collingullie, with just two years at Yarraville in Melbourne in between, for a total of eight senior premierships.

Aiken won four Gerald Clear Medals, during his time in the Farrer League, then claimed the Jim Quinn Medal at age 36 last season.

He said he will retire satisfied with his career.

“I’m pretty happy with what I’ve achieved at Gullie, as a group and personally, I’ve got no regrets,” he said.

“I’ve been pretty lucky with flags, some people go through their careers without winning one.

“The most important thing for me is being a one-club player, I always wanted to do that.

“I’ve had opportunities to go elsewhere in town and I’ve been close a couple of times but the people here have treated me fantastic since I was 14-15, and the same with my family now they’re out there.”

Aiken always had a fair idea this year would be his last.

“Probably this time last year is when I knew,” he said.

“I thought I would see how I got through the year. I spoke to (wife) Gemma about it, my young bloke is in the 17s now, Gemma would like to play netball again and someone has got to look after our two-year-old.

“My body is starting to fall apart now and it’s definitely telling me it’s time.

“You just know.”

Aiken rates the current crop of Demons highly, naming Jayden Klemke and Chris Gordon up there with Chris Gow and Jimmy Wild as the best he has played alongside.

He is also excited for what the future holds for Demons teens Harry Perryman and Matt Kennedy.
