The girl was walking alone on the busy street when, around 8.15am, a man ran up behind her and grabbed her.
Another man nearby shouted at the attacker from a distance, causing him to run away.
The girl ran the nearby high school and told staff what had happened, who then called the police.
Officers commenced an investigation and have released a description of the man who grabbed the girl in a bid to identify him.
The man is described as being in his mid-30s and was wearing a black hooded jumper and light-coloured denim jeans at the time.
Police are appealing for anyone with information relating to the incident, including the man who intervened, to come forward.
