It comes after one resident highlighted the state of the rail yard in last week’s The Daily Advertiser.

Tidy Towns chairman John Rumens agreed the rail yard could do with some tender loving care, but also pointed to other areas around the city that could do with a facelift.

I drive along Railway Street quite often and (the railway yard) is not a good look,” Mr Rumens said.

The garden that was once a bright centrepiece across from the railway station platform now looks forgotten.

“The Tidy Towns secretary and I visited the railway station recently and the garden is derelict and the Tidy Towns sign there is looking quite forlorn,” he said.

Mr Rumens said it was important to make these areas aesthetically pleasing for rail travellers to encourage them to make Wagga a future destination.

“It’s a window into Wagga for rail travellers.”

In the same vein of thought, some sights along the Sturt Highway have caught Mr Rumen’s eye, including the old flour mill site, which is in the middle of being redeveloped.

“The block on the corner of Baylis and Edward streets has also been a mess for a while,” he said.

The site used to be a service station and is in a prime position on the highway and near the railway station where visitors to the city arrive or pass through.

Mr Rumens cited the old South Wagga Bowling Club as another eyesore.

A resident pointed out the old Weissel Oval site, another block being redeveloped has been left to look worse for wear until recently.

“Businesses need to be good corporate citizens and keep their property in as presentable condition as possible,” Mr Rumens said.

The Tidy Towns committee is holding its annual Clean Up Wagga Day this Sunday, and Mr Rumens is hoping for a good turnout.

The group is cleaning up Willans Hill and Wiradjuri Reserve, with registration at the museum and the reserve from 9am.
