Rights go up in smoke
I WONDER how much time Cr Conkey spends in the main street. His anti-smoking campaign is no doubt well meant but he should be questioning the danger to pedestrians from skateboards, bicycles and even personal mobility vehicles used by people who do not let others know of their presence by sounding a horn.

These vehicles and bicycles are silent thus put other street users at risk. As regards to smokers in the main street, they seem to be in a minority although the Morgan Street front of the government building resembles a very large, ugly ashtray and should be cleaned and kept clean.
For the record, I have never smoked but until cigarettes are illegal I defend the right of others to smoke, hopefully in a way that respects the rights of those who do not.

Young Nats have sold out
I REFER to the Young Nationals recent announcement supporting homosexual marriage and motions to the effect of supporting a conscience vote in the federal Coalition and worse still inflicting your opinion on another organisation the National Party. Have I missed something?
I thought the Young Nationals two ideological founding principles were conservatism and agrarianism. What are they now?
The Wikipedia definition of conservatism is “a political and social philosophy that promotes traditional social institution in the context of culture and civilisation.”
My concerns are if you have abandoned your party’s first ideological principle, what’s to stop you abandoning the second principle – agrarianism? Then who are you representing? Not farmers or their communities that support them. Your announcement has already abandoned communities!
You take your communities trust and glamorised it for a “flash in the pan” public announcement that’s already off the national media list of stories today.
Secondly, your motion to support a conscience vote contradicts your announcement as an organisation. What about the one third that voted against your motion? Do they have their say publicly?
Lastly, in supporting “homosexual marriage” you are condoning sodomy - a sinful act.
This blight on society will do nothing to engender sustainable regional communities in the future. You have succumbed to secular media and educational institutions in this countrym not influenced them.

Writing’s on the wall
THANK you for your article on the city-wide problem of graffiti. I, too, am disgusted by the recent increase in graffiti and not enough is being done about it.
The old Guide Hall in Jack Avenue, Mt Austin has terrible graffiti on it and although it has been reported to the owners of the building – Department of Housing – nothing has been done.
The graffiti, all over the brick work and much worse than what is on the underpass, was reported to the department’s general maintenance line months ago. There was no specific graffiti phone number, it just went in the queue for the general maintenance (of which I had to wait an on the phone to log).
There is a playground next to this building and graffiti on some of the fences of houses bordering the Jack Avenue park. Graffiti is hardly a fitting backdrop for a children’s play area.
This playground is also near a primary school and thoroughfare for many people. We have lived in Mt Austin for 22 years and graffiti is worse now than ever. As Cr Kendall says, a group response is needed. Please could the council ensure those who need to take action do so. If graffiti like that remains it brings down the good name of suburbs as well as wider Wagga.
