Winding down to the end of a Bulldogs coaching partnership with Luke Berkrey, Byrne admits he is undecided about his football future.
“Yeah, not 100 per cent sure of what my plans will be for next year,” Byrne said.
“I don’t know whether I'll play again, and if I do, who it'll be for, or even what code.”
At a time when Cootamundra has nosedived out of contention for the Group Nine finals, Byrne’s comments are at least an indication he may play on in 2016.
Widely regarded as one of the foremost hookers in the premiership, Byrne represented Group Nine and Riverina at representative level this year.
And news that he is weighing up his options for next year will spark interest from clubs across the region.
Although boasting a wonderful history with Cootamundra, Byrne also branched out to have a one-off season with Young in 2014.
Returning to the Bulldogs this year, Byrne formed a coaching combination with Berkrey that generated success early in the season before the team crashed out of the top five.
Coincidentally, Byrne has been thrown up on social media as a potential candidate for a revolutionary position at Tumut.
After three dismal years, the Blues have embarked on a unique bid to secure a full-time development officer for the club.
The job, however, which also involves the captain-coach role, is specifically aimed at players with a background in the NRL.
For Byrne, one coaching role is most assuredly off the agenda for 2016.
“Definitely won't be coaching reserve grade (at Cootamundra),” he said.
With Cootamundra heading into a tough clash with Southcity at Les Boyd Oval on Sunday, Byrne has revealed teenager Jarred Prosser will be halfback, with Matt Forsyth moving to lock.
The Bulls have named an unchanged squad, but positions in the pack are still be finalised.
Last Sunday Mitch Curran and Kieren Schauf were listed on the bench, but started the game against Kangaroos.
Southcity will lock down third place on the ladder by beating Cootamundra and Tumbarumba in their final two games.
