Giants Academy members Jock Cornell, Matt Flynn and Lachie Flagg have been called up into Greater Western Sydney’s (GWS) reserve grade team for the North Eastern Australian Football League (NEAFL) against Eastlake.
Former Mangoplah-Cookardinia United-Eastlakes (MCUE) player, and current Giants Academy member, Harry Himmelberg will also be in action, lining up against them for his Canberra club Eastlake.
The game shapes an important one for the teenagers as they continue to push their claims for a spot on an AFL list at the year’s end.
MCUE young gun Jock Cornell said games with the Giants’ second string team were a great chance to show off their skills.
“It is, it’s good exposure,” Cornell said.
“That level of footy we don’t very often around here so it’s good to get an opportunity with the Giants now and then.”
Cornell played a game for the Giants last season, and Saturday will be his third this year.
He played at Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast, then as a curtain raiser to the AFL at Spotless Stadium.
Cornell is looking forward to the one-off game in Wagga.
“Definitely, you get a bit sick of flying everywhere,” he said.
“It’s good to have one of these games of footy in Wagga.”
Also topping up for the Giants will be Henty’s Harrison Macreadie, and Albury pair Dylan McDonald and Lachlan Tiziani.
Jonathon Patton has been named in the Giants’ reserve grade team, alongside Riverina products Jake Barrett and Jacob Townsend.
Himmelberg will not be the only Riverina footballer in Eastlake’s team with Osborne’s Dan O’Connell and Nick Pleming both set to line up for the Bombers.
The NEAFL game will be played as a curtain raiser to the Farrer League clash between East Wagga-Kooringal and Northern Jets.
