There is a child with an arm full of dinosaur books, another with books on sharks or rainforests for a school project, and someone else is learning about volcanoes on the online Britannica Library Edition.
Children seem to love the natural world and science.
So many questions to be asked and answered, like the perennial “why is the sky blue?” or “where does the sun go at night?”.
There are many benefits for children learning about science and developing science enquiry skills.
Science enquiry helps develop a combination of life skills like problem-solving, investigation, patience and perseverance. It also encourages children to be inquisitive, ask questions and ponder possible solutions.
So with all these benefits in mind the Wagga Wagga City Library in partnership with the Riverina Science Hub will be launching a brand new set of resources to engage excite and develop your child science enquiry skills.
The Science Kits which will be available for loan from the August 21 are made possible through an Inspiring Australia Grant.
Your child can look forward to exploring kits like The Human Body which includes “look inside me” MRI scans, real working stethoscopes and a life size x-ray of the human skeleton.
Another kit is called Mini Beasts and contains a jumbo magnifier, a two way bug viewer and an Arthropod specimen set.
You could also borrow science kits on space and magnets.
Don’t forget all the other activities that will be undertaken during National Science Week August 15 to 23.
Activities include:
- Solar Astronomy and star gazing with Michael Maher from the Wagga Observatory
- Kitchen Storytime Science for preschoolers.
- Pair of Shorts: two Australian documentaries from 360 Degree Films which will be screened at Forum 6 Cinemas.
For more information on these FREE events and for bookings contact the library on 6926 9700.
Behind the Truth
BEHIND the Truth, a traveling exhibition drawn from the photographic collections of the State Library of NSW is on display at the Wagga Wagga City Library until August 13.
Don’t miss your opportunity to discover the real stories behind some of Australia’s most iconic images and to ponder the question of whether photographs present us with reality, or not?
