Join us as we mark Dame Mary Gilmore's birthday with some yummy cake and readings by local writers.
This exhibition pays tribute to Dame Mary Gilmore (August 16 1865 to December 3, 1962) and marks 150 years since her birth date.
Featuring recollections of both the everyday and the extraordinary from her book Old Days: Old Ways, many of these thought-provoking, moving memories are set in and around the Wagga Wagga district.
This exhibition will be on display at the Historic Council Chambers site from Friday, August 7 until Sunday, November 22.
Join us for this celebration, with light refreshments and presentations by Booranga Writers Centre's David Gilbey and CSU English lecturer Lachlan Brown.
Please RSVP 6926 9655 or museum@wagga.nsw.gov.au for this FREE event.
Author visit
ANOTHER writer we are excited to welcome to the museum at the end of August is one of Australia's best-known broadcasters and journalists Mike Carlton.
Mike will discuss his most recent book, First Victory.
Mike has had a life-long passion for naval history and this is the story of the first victory for HMAS Sydney and Australian troops, against the German raider Emden, in the early days of World War I.
This public program will mark the opening of the exhibition War at Sea: The Navy in WWI, which will be on display from Friday, August 28 until Sunday, November 15 at the Museum’s Historic Council Chambers site.
We would love you to join us to welcome our special guest Mike Carlton on Saturday, August 29, from 10.30am to 11.30am at the Museum of the Riverina, Historic Council Chambers site (corner Baylis and Morrow streets).
Please RSVP for this FREE event by phoning 6926 9655 or emailing museum@wagga.nsw.gov.au.
Last chance
THE Museum of the Riverina’s Historic Council Chambers site will be changing exhibitions next week and closed from Monday, August 3 and reopening on Friday, August 7.
This is the last weekend to see the exhibition Writtenworlds: handwritten local histories, which is on display at the Museum of the Riverina’s, Historic Council Chambers Site until 2pm Sunday, August 2.
Kangaroo March
AT THE end of the year the Museum of the Riverina will continue to commemorate the Anzac centenary with a new collaborative exhibition, showcasing the work of historian and author, Sherry Morris.
The Kangaroo March 1915: our local boys walk to war will focus on the men from Wagga and towns in the local area who enlisted and joined the Kangaroo March at various towns along the March route.
The recruitment marches which walked men to Sydney from parts of rural NSW tried to address the slowing of volunteer numbers in 1915 as it became evident to all that the war was not just a European holiday.
The Kangaroo March was the longest of the recruiting marches spanning over 350 miles.
To make this exhibition as complete and comprehensive as possible, we are very interested in talking with descendants of the men who departed that day in 1915.
Please contact Genevieve Mott on 6926 9657.
