Townsend will continue his push for senior selection in Wagga on Saturday when the Giants’ reserve grade team takes on Eastlake in the North Eastern Australian Football League (NEAFL) clash at Robertson Oval.
Townsend gathered 25 possessions and kicked two goals in a best-on-ground performance in the reserves last weekend so is an outside chance of winning a recall for the trip to Perth to take on Fremantle this weekend.
If he does not, the 22-year-old Leeton footballer is looking forward to the trip to Wagga.
“I reckon it’s a 90 per cent chance I’ll be playing down in Wagga,” Townsend said.
“Obviously everyone’s plan is to play as many AFL games as they can but they can only pick 22 every week and if you have to play twos, then that is fine.
“It’s always good to come home and I’m sure I’ll have family come over for the game.
“It should be good.”
Townsend has suffered an injury-interrupted season where he is yet to add to his 27 AFL games.
He enjoyed a good pre-season then suffered a foot injury after playing in the Giants’ first NAB Cup game.
Townsend was close to a return and picked up a hamstring strain.
“It’s a bit annoying but that’s footy,” he said.
“I’ve had four games back now and I’m starting to get back some match fitness.
“It’s hard to get back into the team at the moment but I’m focussed on getting back and playing as many games as I can to try and play a couple of games in first grade before the season ends.”
Townsend is happy with his current form.
“Last weekend felt like I was starting to cover the ground a little bit more,” he said.
“The ball fell my way a bit too, which was good.”
Townsend has been at the Giants since their entry to the AFL.
He is off contract at the end of the season with discussions with the club yet to begin.
Fellow Riverina producets Kurt Aylett and Anthony Miles have left GWS for opportunities elsewhere but Townsend said he would love nothing more than to stay at the Giants.
“I’m just focussing on playing my best footy.”
